What are the safety rules for a drill press?

The drill press is one of the most frequently used machine tools in every workshop. You can use this machine to drill holes in a wide variety of materials like plastics, wood, and various metals.

Before using a machine, you should check a few things, especially with electrically powered devices. First, always check the inexactness of the cables before drilling. If the wires have breaks or bare spots, then drilling is not advisable. In this case, you must change the wire or replace your machine.

You will find both individual parts and entirely new devices.

If the cable is intact, take care of the chuck yourself. If it is still firmly in place, drilling is possible without any problems. However, if the inserted drills feel loose, then the drill chuck needs to be changed.

In principle, only trained people in their work are allowed to work on the drill machines. Otherwise, there is a risk that the operating personnel will be injured through ignorance or that machines or products can malfunction.

  • Machines may only be used as intended. That means: the employees are only allowed to use and operate these following the instructions from temporary employment agencies and customer companies.
  • You must check the device to ensure that it is safe to operate every time it is used, e.g., external damage, loose fastenings, and abnormal noises when idling.
  • Before switching on, check the tool and drill chuck (the tool holder) for proper condition. If machines are defective or do not work as expected, you must not put them into operation. In the event of danger, you must switch off the device immediately.
  • In addition, you must notify the support in the manufacturer’s company to remove the fault. Employees are only allowed to rectify malfunctions if they have been specially trained to do so by the company. In all other cases, only the specialists on-site are permitted to fix the fault.
  • Work pieces must never be held by hand; instead, use jigs to keep them.
  • The tool and work piece may only be changed when the machine is at a standstill.
  • Shavings must never be removed by hand. Cleaning wool or cloth, a hand broom is suitable for this purpose. Blowing off with compressed air is not permitted.
  • The chips are only distributed at the workplace, and drilling oil or cooling lubricants are dispersed as an aerosol in the breathing air. There is also a significant amount of noise pollution.
  • Employees must wear protective equipment. These can be safety shoes, protective goggles, and a long hairnet, or headgear.
  • Gloves must never be worn when working on a machine.
  • Employees must wear tight-fitting clothing. It would be best if you turned Sleeves with cuffs inwards. Scarves are life threatening!
  • During the work, jewelry, e.g., Rings, chains, wristwatches, are not allowed.
