What is Rear Facing Car Seat?

Even though rear-facing car seats have been around since 1988, many customers are new to the concept.

It is always recommended rear-facing car seats since they are much safer than forward-facing car seats. As a result, rear-facing children under the age of 15 months are now a legal requirement.

Most of the time, it remains the best option after 15 months. A rear-facing seat may be appropriate for children up to 18 kilograms. Others can accommodate children up to 25 kilograms.

When rear-facing, how do they move their legs?

Children have extremely flexible bones, bones don’t start calcifying until about three years old, and joints are more mobile; as their heads are larger, they tend to be top-heavy, so when sitting, they will usually tuck their legs up or sit cross-legged.

Children commonly cross their legs in a car seat, whether forward-facing or rear-facing, because sitting with their legs hanging is uncomfortable because they are not supported.

During the time of rear-facing, their legs are hence supported through the back side of the vehicle seat, and they can easily choose to sit with their legs crossed or even in forged state.

What is the best way to communicate with my child in the car?

You should never be communicating with the kids during the drive time regardless of whether they are rear-facing or even if they are forward-facing.

We do, however, also recommend you to pick special designed mirrors that allow children to see you and parents see them in the rear-view mirror.

Will my child get bored being rearward facing?

It’s the opposite in our experience! With a forward-facing car seat, children can only see the back of the front seat with a limited view of the side window. The child can see out of the side and rear windows when in a rear-facing car seat.

What happens if you’re rear-ended in a car with a rear-facing seat?

Only 5% of all car accidents involve rear-end collisions, which usually occur at much slower speeds than frontal collisions. Both vehicles are moving in the same direction during a rear-end collision, which propels the vehicle hit from behind forward. In other words, the crash forces are much smaller than they would be in a frontal collision where the vehicle suddenly stops.

They are effective in rear-end collisions, while the hazards in such situations pose less of a threat than those in frontal collisions, which means your overall safety is increased.

What is a rearward-facing tether strap?

The tether straps are hence attached to the front seat. They are fitted to the front seat runners, designated tether loops (Scandinavian cars) or around the front seat pillars. After a frontal collision, they reduce the rebound (backward movement of the car seat).

A rear-facing car seat should be used for how long?

There is no doubt that rear-facing car seats are safer than forward-facing car seats. As a result, we always recommend our customers use rear-facing seats for as long as possible.

Alternatively, if you opt for forward-facing seats, R44 seats use a weight-based system and are approved for use from 9kg. R129 or i-Size forward-facing seats are height-based and can be used at 76cms.
